I'm hands on but I keep my team motivated
In the spotlight this week is Tom Verner, Managing Director and Founder of The Momentum Group. Tom featured in today's Irish News as one of Northern Ireland's High Flying business people.
What was your first job?
I started my career as a Sales Executive for ESD Video – a Belfast based wholesaler, supplying films into video outlets and supermarkets. You can imagine how long ago this was considering that video has been obsolete for years!
What qualifications do you have?
Having studied later in life, I now have a BA (Hons) Degree in Business. I’m one of those people that has worked from the ground up, learning as I go to achieve success.
What do you attribute your success to?
I work hard, have a can-do attitude and good sense of what works and doesn’t. My ethical standards comprise honesty, integrity and passion which all play a major part in the success. To be honest, I just love what I do which is helping other businesses achieve greater success. Also, ensuring my Plan A works as I don’t have a Plan B!
How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?
As those who know me will vouch, what you see is what you get. On a social level I’m a regular, affable guy, but in a business context I act with absolute focus and rigour for my clients.
Who do you look up to in business?
There are dozens of entrepreneurs that I admire because of their success, but choosing just one of them is like picking a single book to learn from – it’s impossible!?
How do you get the best out of people who work for you?
I am a very ‘hands-on’. I encourage everyone to excel in what they do and aim to keep the team motivated. I also believe in flexibility as this often works both ways. I was once asked “can I get my hair cut in work time?” My response was “it grows in work time so why not?” It’s all about creating a happy environment.
If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?
I would like to encourage more business owners to be open minded and think further afield.
What website or app could you not do without?
Facebook – it’s addictive for nosiness!
What was the last book you read?
Playing: How to Win – a great read on business strategies.
What car do you drive?
BMW 520. Honestly, I’m more of a sports fanatic than a petrol head but I do like the heated seats in winter!
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
My New Year’s resolution was to create a bucket list.
What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?
Definitely all kinds of sports – I’m an avid Liverpool fan (so don’t hold that against me).
