Government Strategy Prioritises Innovation as Prime Minister Triggers Article 50
Last week Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 to initiate the negotiations that will prelude the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
In taking this new direction, the country will face fresh challenges. Stimulating innovation, strengthening employment and catalysing growth, through investment in R&D, will be central to a successful Brexit strategy.
Chancellor Philip Hammond’s spring budget showed that the government seeks to continue to reward innovation, in building a more globally competitive economy, through its generous R&D tax relief initiative.
Indeed, this has been a longstanding strategic policy since the referendum. In a speech delivered in mid-November, Prime Minister Theresa May explained that post-Brexit she would like to make the UK the “global go-to place for scientists, innovators and tech investors” – a pledge that she hopes will position Britain as an influential international player.
At the Momentum Group, Managing Director Tom Verner is embracing this policy:
“This is a crucial time for U.K. businesses, as they weather the uncertainty of our E.U. exit. Increasing commitment to the already generous R&D tax relief initiative, as well as pending corporation tax changes, will bolster the confidence of businesses even as we begin our departure from the E.U.
As industry leading R&D tax credit specialists, informing companies about this initiative and helping them engage with what is often considered a specialist area of tax remains a core value of our business. We will continue to work hard to help eligible firms secure successful claims. This can then be reinvested back into the company, allowing them to further innovate.
We focus exclusively on R&D tax relief claims, with an expert team who apply extensive knowledge of R&D legislation and the ability to identify R&D activities on behalf of client firms. In fact, we’ve identified tens of millions in qualifying expenditure for companies across a full range of sectors throughout Northern Ireland and the U.K.
It’s our plan to continue to partner with companies long into the future.”
